One of the more common requests we have here at Zero Bullshit Insurance is to have the different parts of Medicare explained, specifically Parts A and B, which are also known as Original Medicare. If you’re one of the ones who are unsure about these two plans and what you can benefit from being enrolled in them, here’s all that you need to know.
What Is Part A?
Medicare Part A, in essence, is going to be your coverage for inpatient care. It can cover your hospitalization, nursing home care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care.
What Is Part B?
Medicare Part B is going to cover your outpatient care. This includes your outpatient surgeries, visits to your doctor or specialist, ambulance services, mental health, durable medical equipment, and even some limited outpatient prescriptions.
When Do I Become Eligible To Enroll?
You become eligible for Original Medicare when you:
- Turn 65
- Receive Social Security benefits for at least 24 months
- Have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
You should be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare if you receive Social Security benefits but if you are not, you will need to enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period. This period starts three months before your 65th birthday.
